Praha: Tutoring
People in Need provides free individual tutoring for children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds in Prague. Once a week, volunteers come directly to the children’s homes to help them with schoolwork and anything else they need.
Tutoring is aimed at children who are struggling in school and are not receiving adequate support at home, often because their parents have limited education. The main goal is to stop their academic decline and improve performance, but the benefits extend much further: increased interest in school, reduced absenteeism, and greater in-class participation.
Online Tutoring
During school closures caused by COVID‑19, we focused on children who suddenly lost access to education and essential technology. In cooperation with Česko.Digital and the Czech Savings Bank Foundation, we provided laptops to hundreds of families for online tutoring to help them catch up. We continue to support online learning and offer devices to Ukrainian children when needed.
- Each week, a volunteer or staff member visits the child’s home (or, if needed, works in our offices, schools, or libraries) for a two‑hour tutoring session.
- A parent or caregiver must be present during the session. This ensures a calm learning environment, encourages them to participate, and helps them stay informed about assignments and learning progress.
- Through this approach, we actively involve parents in their child’s education, helping them gain information and confidence to support at home.
