Ukraine
We have been working in Ukraine since 2003. Initially, we supported independent civil society actors in their fight against corruption and the shrinking of the civic space. After the Revolution of Dignity, we continued our work in the sphere of anti-corruption and focused on supporting regional watchdog organisations that monitored the spending of public finances.
Russia's invasion in February 2022 forced us to upscale our operations in Ukraine to meet the new demands. From the first day of the invasion, we helped activists, journalists, and human rights defenders to relocate to safer regions and to continue their work. We also began a re-granting programme aimed at supporting organisations working in the sphere of war-crime documentation. We also supported independent media, whose financial situation deteriorated dramatically due to the financial crisis caused by the invasion. We also organise rehabilitation retreats to help activists and journalists recover from trauma and continue their fieldwork.
