Chomutov: Tutoring
People in Need provides individual and group tutoring in Chomutov to primary schoolchildren. Our volunteers visit children in their own homes once a week. Where this is impossible, we tutor children at our branch. We provide group tutoring run by volunteers at two Chomutov primary schools with the support of one of our workers. Tutoring is aimed at children in their 1st and 2nd years of school and the maximum capacity of a group is 8.
We also provide tutoring and free-time activities for children from Chomutov’s hostels. Tutoring takes place at the hostel, in a room reserved solely for children. The maximum capacity of one worker is 20 registered children, although we always try to solve every situation individually. Our capacity also depends on the current number of volunteers.
Our service is directed towards children who have problems in school and do not receive sufficient support at home. This is usually due to their parents having just a low level of education, often no more advanced than primary school level. The aim of our service is not only to prevent the child from failing their year or to improve their grades. The other effects of our tutoring are important, such as increased interest in school, fewer absences and a more active approach in class.
Anyone older than 15 years of age can volunteer. No experience is needed, the only thing you need is to like working with children, be reliable and happy to invest 2 hours of your time a week. Apart from tutoring, we also organize educational free-time activities, mainly during vacations, where volunteers are more than welcome to join us.

Individual tutoring usually takes place in the child’s home. One parent always has to be present, which is one of the basic obligations he must fulfil. The parent guarantees to maintain peace and quiet at home during tutoring and ideally should also be involved in the tutoring process. If, for whatever reason, it is impossible the child to tutor the child at home, there is a classroom available for the purpose on our premises at the branch.

Group tutoring

We provide group tutoring in two local Chomutov primary schools – ZŠ Písečná and ZŠ Příkopy. It is organised as an after-school tutoring group, where children revise and practise what they’ve learnt in school. There is also time for fun learning and developing various skills. We also provide tutoring at one of Chomutov’s hostels.
