We’re releasing funds from Club of Friends as the sixth typhoon in a month hit the Philippines.
Published: Nov 27, 2024 Reading time: 1 minuteThe sixth typhoon in one month hit the Philippines on 16 and 17 November. Super typhoon Man-Yi (local name Pepito) hit the eastern part of the archipelago and killed nine people. The typhoons forced more than 700,000 people to evacuate, and more than 10 million were affected. We decided to release €75,000 from the Club of Friends to help our local partners.
With the continuous climate change, typhoons are increasingly frequent and of higher intensity in the Philippines. Last month, six of them hit the archipelago, leaving millions without food, water, livelihoods, and homes. Moreover, agricultural and industrial damages were high, and many places experienced subsequent landslides and flooding.
We are cooperating with the Integrated Rural Development Foundation (IRDF) in Viga, Panganiban, and Bagamanoc municipalities in Catanduanes province (northeast of the archipelago) to bring food kits and cash assistance.
“Many people lost their livelihoods in the past month. At People in Need, we will focus our help on the people who need it most, such as older people, people with disabilities, and families with children under 5 years old. Cash assistance allows people to buy what they need most,” says Pascal Arthaud, Head of People in Need Philippines.
