We're monitoring the weather situation closely and activating flood teams
Published: Sep 12, 2024 Reading time: 2 minutesOur field teams are activated and ready to go to the affected areas in response to flood alerts. Our teams received training in helping people affected by disasters, providing social counselling, and intervening in crises. We are in contact with the integrated rescue system and are coordinating with other organisations for possible assistance.
In the weeks following the floods, we will focus on immediate material assistance to the municipalities. Still, we see our primary role in targeted aid and the reconstruction of affected households. We are mapping the needs in the affected areas with the mayors and crisis staff, going around to individual households and focusing on helping the most at-risk individuals and families, those without relatives to turn to, and those without significant savings. We provide psychological assistance, advise on processing state aid, and repair or remove moisture from houses. We often continue working in these areas years after disasters, when attention has shifted elsewhere, but people are still coping with the aftermath.

We have many years of experience with flood programmes from 1997, 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2013. We also assisted following the devastating tornado in Moravia in 2021. Check out our Living in a Floodplain booklet (available only in Czech), which describes preparing for a flood, what to do in the emergency phase and lots of advice on rebuilding flooded properties.
You can also read the Fire and Rescue Service's basic advice on what to do during a flood and how to prepare for one (in Czech). Let's keep our fingers crossed!
