VIDEO: Emergency repairs of houses damaged by hostilities in Chernihiv, Ukraine
Published: Aug 1, 2022 Reading time: 1 minuteAbout 3,500 buildings were damaged or destroyed during the hostilities in the Chernihiv oblast at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 80% of them were houses of local residents.
"On March 19th, the shooting started. It burned here, it burned there, it burned everywhere. I said to my husband: ´Come on, I will take you to the corridor to sit on the ottoman.´ He is on crutches. He is disabled and blind. We got to the basement and there was an explosion, the door was torn off. The men ran out into the street, saying: ´The house is on fire!´ I ran around the apartment with a cane. I was going as fast as I could. But still, I was falling. I ran around, shouting: ´Our house is on fire, come on!´ Well, rescuers took my husband away. Everything burned down,” says Nina Mykhal from Chernihiv.
Together with local partner Troitsa and funding from USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, we support the people whose houses were damaged or destroyed. We do emergency repairs of damaged roofs and blown-out windows in order to protect homes from rain and wind. Visit the destroyed houses and listen to the stories of the people who barely got out of them alive.
