Since 2005, People in Need (PIN) has been dedicated to supporting Georgian communities and civil society in their pursuit of sustainable development, accountable governance, basic human rights and strengthened democratic values.

We are deeply concerned by the ongoing erosion of civil rights and democratic freedoms under the Georgian Dream rule, particularly the increasing use of excessive force against peaceful protesters and journalists. These actions pose a grave threat to the country’s civil society and independent media, undermining Georgia’s democratic progress and threatening its European aspirations.

On November 28, the European Parliament condemned Georgia’s October 26 parliamentary elections as neither free nor fair, citing significant electoral violations, voter intimidation, and media interference. MEPs called for sanctions against those responsible and urged the EU to withhold recognition of the election results until they are rerun under independent oversight.

In response, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that Georgia would suspend talks on EU accession and reject EU budgetary grants until end 2028. European integration is a key constitutional objective under Article 78, supported by a significant majority of Georgians. The suspension of EU talks has sparked mass protests on a national scale, which have been met with extreme violence, including arbitrary detentions and the excessive use of tear gas, water cannons, and brutal beatings of protesters, journalists, and opposition figures.

These actions pose a severe threat to Georgia’s democratic development and human rights, undermining the essential role of civil society in promoting accountability and freedoms.

PIN stands in solidarity with our partners in Georgian civil society and condemns all violence and actions that prevent Georgian people’s right to peaceful protest and ensure journalists can work without fear of retaliation. We urge the ruling party to adhere to democratic principles, including the impartial and thorough investigation of all instances of violence against protesters and journalists in accordance with international standards. Upholding the rights of individuals to express their views freely and safeguarding the integrity of the press is vital for a thriving, democratic society.
