People in Need condemns the murder of David Haines
Published: Sep 16, 2014 Reading time: 1 minuteWe are truly appalled by the savage murder of our colleague David Haines, who was abducted in Syria last year. This inhuman and incomprehensible act perpetrated by the radicals from the so-called Islamic State must be unequivocally condemned as well as other atrocities being committed by this group of fanatics.
David Haines worked in Syria for the French NGO Acted which is, together with People in Need, a member of the group of eight NGOs Alliance 2015. In Syria, we are in close contact with Acted. Some of our colleagues knew David in person, for he used to work with them in former Yugoslavia, Libya or Southern Sudan.
The murder of David Haines directly affects the entire humanitarian community and all people who are helping the victims of natural disasters and conflicts in troubled regions around the world, often being aware of the risk they are taking. Every time such act is performed, operating space for humanitarian workers shrinks.
We would like to express our condolences to all the bereaved and friends of David Haines, who passed away at the age of 44 and left his two daughters and his wife.
