Livestock gifts lift Zambian farmers out of poverty
Published: Jan 22, 2024 Reading time: 1 minuteIn rural Zambia, a single cow can lift a family out of poverty. Livestock has been progressively acknowledged as a pillar to ensure the viability of many small family farms in developing countries. Zambia is not an exception—the livestock sector plays an important role in the socio-economic development of the country. Many smallholder farmers in Zambia struggle with poverty and food insecurity. The region also faces climate change impacts. Livestock, therefore, helps farmers increase resilience while boosting incomes. Journey to Zambia’s Western Province with us. Visit Mercy and Simeko and find out how one cow has helped them escape poverty.
Following the death of her husband, Mercy went through some difficult times. She had to look after the farm in Mulundumano by herself. Thus, the cattle which she received from us was a big help for her.
Simeko was also among the 130 small farmers whom we supported in Western Zambia.
She also encourages Zambian farmers to take part in the project as well and contribute to eradicating poverty in their country.
Through our Livestock Integration Initiative (LII) project, we are helping Zambians fight hunger and poverty and enhance their resilience to climate change. The LII project empowers farmers to develop sustainable livelihoods and agriculture practices. With continued support, it can create lasting change across Zambian communities.
