This morning southeastern Türkiye and northern Syria were hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, causing hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and extensive material damage. As the death toll rises, initial reports state that the situation is particularly critical in the Idlib Governorate of Syria, where many internal refugees have sought shelter and safety.

PIN has launched the Earthquake Syria and Türkiye Emergency appeal:

A People in Need (PIN) team is on the ground assessing the situation—in coordination with local authorities—and is ready to provide vital humanitarian aid immediately. "People in Need has been working in the area affected by the earthquake for many years; we already have experienced humanitarian teams on the ground and hundreds of colleagues ready to start helping immediately. Basic humanitarian assistance will be needed. We must address temporary shelter and, later, of course, reconstruction. According to media reports and reports from people on the ground in the region, the scale of the damage is enormous. The number of casualties will rise,” states Šimon Pánek, Director of PIN, emphasising the need to act with urgency, noting that in war-torn Syria, “the situation can quickly become really critical."
