A Safe Place to Play in Kreševo: Czech Citizens Support Renovating a Playground

Kreševo was one of the areas which were hugely affected by devastating floods which hit Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2024. The town's infrastructure was damaged, including the children's playground. With support from the Czech Republic through our Club of Friends, we were the first international organisation to visit Kruševo after this disaster. We renovated the playground and provided further assistance to people affected by floods.

The floods that affected Kreševo and other areas last year inflicted significant damage, including to the children's playground, making it unusable. To restore this important space for play, learning, and development, we secured funding from Czech citizens for its complete renovation.

More than €6130 was invested in repairing the playground, including improvements to the fence and playing surface, creating a safe environment for children to play, learn, and socialise.

The reopening ceremony was attended by Boris Marić, Mayor of Kreševo Municipality; Jana K. Lolić Šindelková, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to BiH; representatives of the BiH Ministry of Security; citizens of Kreševo; and our colleagues representing People in Need.

"Any assistance in these difficult times is extremely important to us. People in Need was the first to visit Kreševo Municipality and provided help when it was most needed. We are fortunate to have friends in the Czech Republic we can count on. We sincerely thank the Embassy of the Czech Republic in BiH for their visit today and ongoing support," said Boris Marić, Mayor of Kreševo Municipality.

Support Where It's Needed Most

The floods have caused widespread damage, negatively affecting the community, including children, who lost the place where they would usually gather and spend some time together.

"Our goal was to ensure that children could still enjoy their childhood despite the hardships their community faced. Education, play, and socialisation are crucial for their development. By renovating this playground, we believe we're providing exactly that," said Dajana Bogdanović during the opening ceremony.

Helping Other Affected Communities

In addition to Kreševo, Czech citizens provided financial aid to 41 families affected by floods in Donja Jablanica, totalling €10,480. Their support made repairing the sewage system possible with an additional €5113.

"I am pleased to be here in Kreševo Municipality today, representing the Czech people. This support would not be possible without the solidarity and generosity of Czech citizens who, despite facing their flood-related challenges, found the strength and willingness to assist the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their own experience with floods adds sincerity and value to their support," said Ambassador Jana K. Lolić Šindelková.

A Symbol of Hope for the Future

The renovated playground in Kreševo represents more than just a restored area—it symbolises hope and community spirit. Following the challenging period this community experienced, this project provides children and their families with a secure place to continue making joyful memories.

This act of solidarity underscores how critical mutual support and collective efforts are during recovery and in building a brighter future.
