"I wrote this song for a friend of mine, when he was going through a really dark time. Now, as I'm sure you guys are aware for the last 8 years people in Syria have faced pain and suffering on a scale that most of us can't imagine. People in Need is an amazing Czech charity, doing incredible work in Syria supporting people who need it the most. They offer emergency response, shelter, food security, water, education. It is on the screen behind us, the czech translation I can´t pronounce, please check it out! It would mean the world to me," he said during his famous song "Leave a Light On".
Eight years after it began, the war in Syria is far from over. The figures are staggering: almost 12 million people are in need of some form of assistance, with 5 million of these relying on humanitarian aid as a “critical” lifeline.
The situation is particularly acute in Idlib, where one and a half million civilians from other parts of Syria have sought refuge, doubling the population of a province already devastated by eight years of war. Close to one million of Idlib’s current inhabitants are children. Trapped between the Syrian government forces and the closed Turkish border, these three million civilians now have nowhere else to go.
After eight years of bombings, eight years of food shortages, and eight years of watching their children growing up knowing only war, these people fear two even more disastrous events: that pro-government forces will launch a military offensive, or that lifesaving aid will be withdrawn.
